khepri tiamat.

“The idea of living as a unit is certainly something I am unfamiliar with. Where I was born there are small family units that could grow to be rather large but no one just followed one regent. Does it work well for all or are there those that suffer?”

Khepri had lived this way his entire life but as he’d splintered away from his family and started his own, he had began to wonder whether a monarchy was really necessary at all. It seemed to benefit the rich most of all and while he couldn’t say vast amounts of Rionnach were stooped in poverty, he could say that not everyone was well off. The collective definitely had some flaws to it and he wondered, could they ever be fixed? ”There are those who suffer, of course... but that is life. I feel as though even if we were a smaller group, or simply independent families, we would still go through pain and strife. Life is buil that way, it seems. Nothing good lasts forever.”

The man’s tone took a somber turn at this and even his expression fell slightly. He had had a good life after leaving his family so that he didn’t have to join the Army. He’d made something of himself. A husband, a father and now? Well, now he was nothing, really. The days dragged on and on and he felt no better with each passing one. Time was not healing his wounds and at times the only things that did were drugs (or so he would claim) and drink. He cleared his throat, his gaze shifting back to Brynn.

”Sorry, I don’t usually make it a habit to be so morose. Anyway, I could take you to town and show you around a bit if you like? I could even show you the college if that might interest you. What is your passion, Brynn?" He asked, curious now to talk more about her and hopeful that she might open up. He had been so focused on her he had missed the rustling in the brush nearby.

For a few moments, her questions remained unanswered, though Brynn had no idea if it was because Khepri wasn't sure how to answer or if he was trying to temper the truth to sound a little sweeter. He didn't seem the type to lie, but no one really wanted to paint their home badly. ”There are those who suffer, of course... but that is life. I feel as though even if we were a smaller group, or simply independent families, we would still go through pain and strife. Life is built that way, it seems. Nothing good lasts forever.” That wasn't exactly what she had meant. Of course, there was always some form of strife, but did one truly benefit from ruling them all while others suffered needlessly? The question was there on her tongue but Brynn held it. It would be rude to continue prying.

Whatever was going on with the man before her he seemed down. Was it because he was always like this or was her entire demeanor what was making him deflate? ”Sorry, I don’t usually make it a habit to be so morose. Anyway, I could take you to town and show you around a bit if you like? I could even show you the college if that might interest you. What is your passion, Brynn?" Ah so it was possible that she was the reason. Whatever it was it didn't seem like Khepri was going to allow it to bother him and with his offer, it was possible her own eyes would be able to answer some of the questions. “I'd love to see, and to tell you truthful I'm not sure I have a passion at all. I enjoy learning herbs and their properties but I'm not sure if I would fully qualify that as passion.”

Lost memories made everything so much more complicated. Had she once been passionate about something? Had there been something that made her want to wake each morning and tackle the day? If there had been it was currently lost, but something else was demanding to be found. Denim blue eyes shifted as her ear twitched. There was a rustling in the brush. Prey wouldn't have been foolish enough to get this close, would it? “Can you see what's making the noise?” Though she spoke to Khepri her eyes never left the track of movement.

CHARMING TRICKSTER
A glimpse of red hair catches your eye amidst the tall grass. When you finally chase down the tiny little men, you find them frolicking in a pile of shimmering, metallic objects. One particularly rotund leprechaun sits on the gold coins and trappings, a pipe in his mouth furling with smoke. Its scent is intoxicating. In one of his hands is a tiny hammer, in the other is a needle, and in front of him is an alien concept: a charming pair of leather shoes.

Offer the leprechaun a gift to receive a useless pair of human shoes.

Attempt to take a piece of gold, and the leprechaun stabs your wolf’s paw with the needle before vanishing (along with all the treasure) into thin air!

“I'd love to see, and to tell you truthful I'm not sure I have a passion at all. I enjoy learning herbs and their properties but I'm not sure if I would fully qualify that as passion.” she said and Khepri smiled a little wider. ”It might be! Medicine just happens to be my specialty... though I'm not the best at it,” he said jokingly. Really, he wasn't a great Doctor and so that was why he'd become a Professor. It was better he teach those more able to do the job in the field. Before he had the chance to lead her away, however, the rustling finally distracted him enough... and her. He blinked and looked at her as she asked him a question. “Can you see what's making the noise?"

He swallowed and shook his head. He supposed he should go investigage, being the 'man' and all. A sigh escaped him and he moved past her to the rustling and when he looked beyond the undegrowth he was at a loss for words over what he saw.”I-I... well you'll have to come see for yourself, Brynn,” he said, slackjawed. There was a tiny humanoid creature with a pair of... uhm... what were those things? They smelled like hide and looked quite interesting. They'd be quite the find for the college to study. Then again, there was also a pile of golden objects beneath the little man that looked quite tantalizing in their beauty. ”Should we chase him off and take his stuff or try to talk to it? Or... leave it alone? It could be a trick of the Fae.” he said. In this forest, he'd believe anything.

The currently easy banter between herself and Khepri was like a balm she hadn't realized was needed. Slowly a tightness she hadn't realized was there was relaxing. ”It might be! Medicine just happens to be my specialty... though I'm not the best at it,” As far as Brynn was concerned no one would ever be the best at medicine. Someone would always know something that another didn't. There would always be a new use for a particular herb that someone knew before the rest of the population

Khepri's sigh didn't escape her notice. It seemed he wasn't exactly the most macho of men and sending him to investigate wasn't the best of ideas. If she had known that she would have looked herself. Brynn had been alone for a while now and was used to chasing after shadows. ”I-I... well you'll have to come see for yourself, Brynn,” Her gaze snapped to Khepri as she moved toward him. There had been a tremor in his voice but nothing about the tone said fear. Confusion maybe, or disbelief. What could he possibly see that would make him react in such a way? What she saw made her head tilt as she tried to process such a thing. A tiny bipedal creature sat on a pile of shimmering circles, while others circled about. Whatever these creatures were made from smelled divine, but nothing about the smell screamed food. ”Should we chase him off and take his stuff or try to talk to it? Or... leave it alone? It could be a trick of the Fae.”

Fae? Was that what these little things were? Had she heard of them before? It was probably best to not say if she hadn't. Instead, she focused on the question she had been asked. The idea of chasing the creatures off and taking what wasn't hers didn't feel right, so Brynn quickly dismissed the idea with a shake of her head. “No, taking these things feel wrong, but what if we offer a trade?” Her eyes scanned the area quickly before settling on a bunch of chamomile. Her body moved carefully, her jaws snapping the stems with ease as moved back toward the absurd scene she had originally left. Gently she set the flowers down by the pile of gold and waited to see what would happen.

“No, taking these things feel wrong, but what if we offer a trade?” she said.

”A trade...” he mused thoughtfully. He turned his head to watch her as she began to gather something. He decided a trade would definately be more fair than simply robbing the little creature, but what to give him he was uncertain. Brynn has selected chamomile but he was looking for something else. Out of the corner of his eye he caught a bunch of withering yarrow - still good if used quickly. He moved towards the plant to pluck it from it's resting place then followed suit and did as Brynn did, placing the yarrow alongside the chamomile at the base of the creature's pile of shining stones.

He didn't say anything, mostly because he wasn't sure this thing would even understand them, but also because he didn't know what to say. He just hoped that whatever this creature was, it was not angered by their offerings. It wasn't much, but it the herbs were useful if you knew how to use them. Best case scenario, it would hand over something interesting and worst case... well he didn't want to think about that. The Fae loved their tricks and the last trick he'd witness in these woods had been otherworldly. He was not eager to experience that again.

”A trade...” His thoughtful tone told Brynn all that she really needed to know. He either knew that was the right answer or he had never dealt with these creatures and was more than willing to follow her lead even if she was only going off of a gut reaction. Without a word, Khepri moved away bringing back with him drying yarrow in his jaws. It was growing old but if used now it would be fine or maybe these creatures had a way to preserve the herbs. Knowledge like that would be beyond anything Brynn could think of but was it possible for her kind?

It seemed the creatures were pleased with their lot and were making moves to leave. The odd-shaped lumps that smelled like hide but not were still in the same place. Were they taking the shiny discs with them? Brynn couldn't help as her nose wrinkled in disappointment. She had wanted one of those terribly. It probably served absolutely no purpose at all and yet she had wanted one. Her gaze went to the golden man at her side, was he disappointed as well, or was there relief at their departure. Was he happy with the gifts they were being left behind? He probably knew more about these creatures than she did, so maybe this was what was considered to be a fair trade.

It seemed Brynn’s plan had worked, at least in the respect that the hide objects were being left behind (or given) to them while the plants they’d offered were being taken in a seemingly happy manner. He couldn’t tell because the creatures were baring their teeth and chortling oddly. They disappeared with the shiny objects sadly and he sighed, though he was still intrigued by the shoes.

”Well that’s never happened to me before. But I think they’re gone and these smelly things belong to us now.” he said. “Anyway, I was going to take you to the college so you could see it for yourself and there are beds you can use while you get yourself settled— but do you mind if we take these too? To study? Or do you want them? They might be fun to chew,” he said with a hint of amusement in his voice. He’d much rather study them but he didn’t want to take them if she wanted them. It wouldn’t be very hospitable of him, now would it?

With his sigh, Brynn knew that Khepri had wanted the shiny stuff too. Her nose had told her that it wasn't edible but maybe if she kept it near a few different plants that had vines the vines could have wrapped about that and she could have woven them into her coat as an ornament. It wouldn't have been a permanent solution but at least for a little while, she could have easily kept the bright disc on her person.

”Well that’s never happened to me before. But I think they’re gone and these smelly things belong to us now.” Her ears twitched as she thought the news over. It seemed that such encounters weren't common and now they were the owners of two weird-looking objects. “Anyway, I was going to take you to the college so you could see it for yourself and there are beds you can use while you get yourself settled— but do you mind if we take these too? To study? Or do you want them? They might be fun to chew,” The idea of chewing the strange hide material didn't seem appealing to Brynn, but she wanted them nevertheless. Luckily there were two. “Since we both contributed then we should both get the prize. I shall take one and you take the other.”

Brynn offered him a smile before bobbing her head to an unspoken thought. “You mentioned the college and beds. One of those sounds very much needed. Lead the way and we shall talk about our new strange gifts as we go.” Brynn waited for Khepri to lead the way, he would know best how to get there and she was more than willing to follow him.

"Since we both contributed then we should both get the prize. I shall take one and you take the other.” ”That sounds more than fair to me,” he said agreeably. “You mentioned the college and beds. One of those sounds very much needed. Lead the way and we shall talk about our new strange gifts as we go.” He smiled and nodded his head before picking up one of the shoes, assuming she'd grab the other, then turning around and heading back the way he came. It was nice to have a decent, if not interesting, memory of this place so that the more recent frights did not frighten him so. This place had been one he and his sister had come to when they were young and honestly, he didn't like the idea of it being spoiled by ghosts and what not. He'd come here today and there had been no ghosts, no frights, no fae... well, maybe those little fellows were fae, but they hadn't seemed scary. He pushed the thoughts from his head as he guided Brynn through the forest, taking pathways he knew quite well by now.

”I think you'll like the college,” he said, though his words were a bit muffled by the shoe he carried in his mouth. It smelled tantalizing but he could not stop to chew it, he had to get it back to the school and see if anyone knew what exactly it was... then maybe he could chew it. It didn't seem edible, but it gave off the smell of old hide and that was good enough for him. Eventually they exited the forest and left it far behind for the meadows of Melrose.
