[ P ] Unfamiliar Faces

Belfast wiped his paws against the old rag that his boss had found years and years and years ago. It was nothing the young man had ever seen before in Cyrileth but he'd never been able to regard it with any wonder or amazement. The cloth had been blue once but now it was washed out and gray in color. There were stains, many green and brown, from years of use. They washed it each morning and kept a basin of cold water for dunking it in, but Belfast could not help but think of it as dirty. But it was cleaner than not using it to wash their paws at all. "Cleanliness is key," the old man had drilled into him. The mantra was what gave them the few customers they saw each day. In the daytime, at least. Those were the common folk, the old ladies seeking herbs for relaxation or medicinal remedies. Sometimes girls would come in and ask for herbs for love potions and Boss would shoo them away. The whistle of the wind through the cavern entrance seemed to quiet and Belfast glanced up, half expecting old Magdalene to appear. Instead, it was a stranger, and the young man's ears twitched. Strangers often meant thieves... and although Belfast knew what to sell them, he hadn't quite gotten used to the feeling yet. “Need anythin'?” He asked as casually as he could. “my sin, my soul.”

Once a season Damon had to visit the apothecary. The old building was located in the middle of Sussex. Alphonse,the old wolf managing the shop, was pragmatic and straight to the point. Things that the mercenary appreciated, especially when he was on one of his Inventory runs. But as he opened the door it was not him greeting Damon but a much younger face. Positively handsome if someone would ask the white fighter.

With his usual poker face on the mercenary regarded the young male curiously. "Is Alphonso out today?" He hoped that if the old man was out the youngster knew his way around and wasn't just there to keep the shop manned. "I need some herbs and toxins. Don't worry about the payment I have it here. he showed Belladonna and henbane, as well as another hare over his shoulder.

"My scars are my memories"

- movin' this to spring! - Belfast hadn't seen this man before, but then again, he could not say that he was well versed in Alphonse's regulars. To him, every face was fresh—and he preferred to keep it that way if he was being painfully honest. The more he recognized the eyes and the orders, he'd come to parse out the intentions. Once he did that, it would be harder to go about his day picking apart herbs and wrapping up parcels—then he'd be forced to acknowledge that he had sold a toxin intended to hurt someone. He preferred the forced naivety of pretending they were just being sold to be forgotten. “Mmmm,” Belfast hummed in answer, nodding his head as the pale stranger asked about Alphonse' whereabouts. It had taken the young man some time, but he had eventually learned that less was more when answering the customers of Alphonse's apothecary. Unless forced to divulge information, the vaguer the response the better. The earthen man tilted his head to take in the herbs that the stranger brought and the prey that came with it. His mouth, inadvertently, watered. “Fair enough.” Dark ears twitched as he moved to where the herbs were kept to dry. “Which herbs? Powdered or whole? Dry or fresh?” “my sin, my soul.”
