Aphelion is not the moon, though he might resemble it, but rather a creature that chases it across the sky – always seeking that light to elucidate the questions of his life. Where does he come from? Where does he belong? An outlier among his kin, favoring neither his brother by birth nor his fathers by fate, is he a product of his biology or his environment? Does one trump the other? Or can he be both? How could he ever know, when half of his puzzle is missing?
He may seem aloof or unfriendly, digesting the world with an impassive stare, but Aph is kind, gentle, and at the mercy of the maze that is his mind, often lost within its labyrinth. Sometimes he wishes that he, like Perihelion, could live in the fast lane. But Aphelion follows the path his brother has scorched into the earth, always slow, always steady. There are many adversities to be faced head-on, and he would prefer to do so with all the information available, lest he make a mistake that cannot be undone.
The preservation of life remains at the forefront of his thoughts. Rionnach's war, though he was too young to participate or even understand it at the time, tore through his life and left it in tatters. Aphelion witnessed as the death of one father tormented the other, the survivor; and it was only in the aftermath that he learned that, though he may not share their blood, he has inherited that very same fight that has pounded not only in both his fathers' hearts but always, too, in his brother's. It might be dimmer when compared to his kin’s, but it’s still there, shimmering, like a slow-burning comet heading for earth.
